>Pianist Chris Hopkins was born in the United States, but has been living in Germany since the age of six. Among his many accomplishments has been to serve as the leader of a superb jazz group comprised of European jazz musicians, Echoes of Swing. >Dank langjähriger freundschaftlicher Kontakte zu deutschen und internationalen Top-Musikern des swingenden Mainstream-Jazz gelingt es dem in Sachen Jazz unermüdlichen Manfred Selchow seit vielen Jahren mit schöner Regelmäßigkeit mit solchen Musikern Einzelkonzerte und mehrtägige Festivals in seinem heimatlichen Westoverledingen oder Deutschland-Tourneen zu veranstalten. Selchow organisierte denn auch 2010 eine Tournee von Dan Barrett's International Swing Party durch einige Städte Deutschlands und der Schweiz. Davon liegen nunmehr acht Titel live aus Neu-Ulm und zwei aus Bochum vom März 2010 als Volume 1 auf dieser CD vor. Posaunist Dan Barrett, auch für die Head-Arrangements verantwortlich, hat eine erstrangige Crew um sich versammelt: Duke Heitger, Trompete, Dan Block, Alt- und Tenorsaxophon, Klarinette, Engelbert Wrobel, Klarinette, Sopran- und Tenorsaxophon, Chris Hopkins, Piano, Eddie Erickson, Gitarre/Banjo, Nicki Parrott, Bass, und als hochkarätigen Special Guest Drummer Butch Miles. Angesichts dieser Besetzung präsentiert sich das Programm interpretatorisch nicht anders als ebenso erstklassig. Im Startertitel 'Back home again in Indiana' stellen sich die Bandmitglieder solistisch vor. Unmöglich, hier alle hervorragenden Leistungen der Musiker ob im dichten Zusammenspiel der Vierer-Bläser-Frontline oder in ihren Soli zu würdigen - einiges sei dennoch versucht. Duke Heitger bestätigt mit energetisch-strahlendem Ton sein Format, Engelbert Wrobel und Dan Block erinnern in ihrem Klarinette-Altsaxophon-Duo in 'Tea for two' an legendäre Aufnahmen Jimmie Noones, während Chris Hopkins, nur von Bass und Drums begleitet, in 'Montevideo' seine Auch-Verehrung für Duke Ellingtons Pianospiel ausdrückt. Im Finale des Neu-Ulmer Konzerts glänzt Butch Miles im Count-Basie-Stück 'The King' (erstmals vom Count 1946 aufgenommen). Gesangsnummern von Heitger in 'Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans', Erickson in 'Keepin' out of mischief now' und Parrott in 'Let's do it' bereichern das Geschehen. Ohne jede vorherige Absprache wurde im Bochumer Konzert ein 'Bochum Electricity Blues' improvisiert, gewidmet den Stadtwerken der Stadt, die dieses Konzert mit sponserten. Die liner notes von Dan Barrett, Chris Hopkins und Mannie Selchow informieren ausführlich zu dieser CD, die einmal mehr vorführt, wie top-lebendig und unverbraucht sich heutzutage swingender Mainstream-Jazz, hier auch mit gelegentlichem Chicago-JazzTouch angereichert, präsentieren kann. Das Volume 2 darf man mit Spannung erwarten.<

Den kompetenten, aussagekräftigen Liner Notes zu den einzelnen Titeln 1 - 8 von Mannie Selchow ist außer unserer uneingeschränkten Begeisterung beim Genießen der CD wirklich nichts hinzuzufügen. Titel 9 'Bochum Electricity Blues' entstand ohne Absprache spontan improvisiert auf der Bühne: während eines ausgedehnten Pianosolos von Chris Hopkins zu Beginn sang Dan Barrett den Kollegen eine im Moment ersonnene Blues-Melodie ins Ohr, mit der die Bläser einsetzten, und woraus nach und nach das Thema sich vor den Ohren des Ensembles wie der Zuhörer in der Jahrhunderthalle und damit dieser Blues sich entwickelte. Such Is Jazz! Mit seinem Armstrong zitierenden, strahlenden Trumpetsolo in 'Do You Know What lt Means To Miss New Orleans' beschließt Duke Heitger in einzigartiger Weise Vol. 1 der 'Tour 2010-Live!'. Für Besucher dieser beiden Konzerte sind die highlights eine lebendige Erinnerung. >The Ellington Centennial focused new attention on the maestro and inspired a welcome flurry of releases - both reissues an newly recorded tributes. In the wake of this activity, one would be hard-pressed to conceive a fresh approach for another Ellington project. Yet this truly international ensemble of accomplished players has managed to do just that through ist varied repertoire (covering four decades of Ellingtonia), imaginative arrangements and inventive solos.<

>This tribute to Duke Ellington has a truly international cast, with a septet co-led by Dutch saxophonist Frank Roberscheuten and American trombonist/cornetist Dan Barrett, it also includes baritone saxophonist Joep Peeters and drummer Onno de Bruijn (from the Netherlands), bassist Karel Algoed (Belgium), as well as two Americans now making their living overseas, pianist Chris Hopkins (Germany) and cornetist, trombonist, and saxophonist Tom Baker (Australia). Although many CDs honoring the legendary bandleader and prolific composer tend to concentrate exclusively on the hits or just one small era, this group covers songs from the 1920s through the 1950s, covering some obvious crowd pleasers as well as forgotten or overlooked gems. 'Take the 'A' Train' opens with a pleasant waltzing introduction, with Hopkins capturing the flavor (without slavishly copying) Ellington's style, Barrett handles Ray Nance's famous 1941 cornet solo with aplomb. Roberscheuten's transcription of 'Subtle Slough' (later known as 'Just Squeeze Me') from a Rex Stewart-led small group session has a fine muted cornet solo by Baker. Hopkins tackles 'The Mooche' as a piano solo and duets with Algoed on 'Pitter Panther Patter,' recreating Ellington's famous duet with Jimmy Blanton at a slightly slower tempo. Barrett switches from slide trombone to valve trombone for 'Moonlight Fiesta,' a Latin number accented by de Bruijn's maracas. 'Happy Reunion' was a ballad feature for tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves, which made ist public debut at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival but never really caught on, Roberscheuten's rich tenor captures ist essence with some lush accompaniment by Hopkins and the rhythm section. The finale is a brisk 'C Jam Blues,' featuring a chorus by each musician as well as comic introductions of each of the soloists by Peeters. Swing fans will want to pick up this fun-filled CD<

>All of us musicians participating in this project have throughout the years found inspiration in the recorded works of the great swinging jazz players of the past. Especially the Swing Era, with ist musical center in Harlem (New York) - at the apex of ist development during the mid-thirties until the early forties - produced some of the most influential soloists and bands in jazz. While the music was still following certain rules concerning the use of melody, classic harmony and straight swinging rhythm, it proved at the same time to be one of the most inspired, creative and colorful eras in jazz history. Still today, this way of playing music together has not lost any of ist charm - assuming that you manage to gather together a bunch of musicians who have the same understanding about how to communicate, and if everybody plays in a natural way. In addition to the influence of this great period in jazz we're of course all living in the present and want our music to sound fresh and alive today. So we decided to call our little tour 'Harlem 2000'.<

>Nothing pleases the straight-ahead jazz fan more than a long set of well-known and obscured classics played with integrity, soul, and swing by an ensemble of tight musicians, and this fills that bill in spades. Recorded over three days at a studio in Hamburg, the trumpeter and his merry men roll hard and brassy over the feisty rhythms of Christian Ramond (bass) and Oliver Mewes (drums) on such gems as 'Beyond the Blue Horizon' and the Lionel Hampton-Charlie Christian classic 'Haven't Named It Yet.' There's lots of variety and joyful mood-swinging between the New Orleans-flavored 'Four or Five Times' (with Engelbert Wrobel's whimsical clarinet) and the lighthearted, muted trumpet-driven romance 'Dreamy Mood.' The recording derives ist name from ist inclusion of two Duke Ellington classics, which give pianist Chris Hopkins (who wrote the colorful liner notes) some strong moments to shine: the mysterious 'Echoes of Harlem' and the perky 'Drop Me off in Harlem.' You'll be glad you got off the bus.<

>Dan Barrett gehört zu den besten Vetretern des Mainstream-Swing der nun schon mittleren Generation. Seine Aufnahmen sind in der Regel mehr als nur einfach mal so eingespielte Musik, sondern haben ein ausgezeichnetes Niveau, was es heute nur noch selten zu hören gibt. Hier spielt er live im Hamburger Birdland-Jazzclub (AD:14.Oktober 2000), dem renomierten Jazzclub im Norden unserer Republik.

Seine Mitstreiter sind von ebenfalls höchstem musikalischen Niveau, z.T. auch sehr flexibel, was die Instrumentierung angeht. Barrett spielt Cornet, Posaune und singt, auch stammen alle Arrangements von ihm. Tom Baker ist an der Trompete, Posaune sowie am Alt- & Tenorsax zu hören. Scott Robinson spielt Klarinette, Alt- & Tenorsax, sowie das Normaphone, eine Art Ventil-Posaune, die wie ein Saxophon aussieht. Die Rhythmusgruppe besteht aus Pianist Chris Hopkins, Eddie Erickson an Gitarre und Banjo, Joel Forbes am Bass und dem Meisterdrummer Jeff Hamilton. Jede Aufnahme erklingt in anderer Besetzung, so dass alleine dadurch niemals Langeweile aufkommen kann.

Zu hören sind fast nur selten zu hörende Titel aus der großen Zeit der des Swing, also den 30-er und 40-er Jahren. 'Easy Street', 'Early Session Hop', 'Vic's Spot' oder 'Esquire Bounce' stehen für solch seltene Juewelen, 'What Is This Thing Called Love' und 'Hindustan' für zwei Standards, 'Jumpin' Punkins' ist ein seltenes Mercer Ellington-Stück aus der großen Zeit des Duke um 1940.

Die insgesamt 13 Titel swingen vom ersten Takt an wie auf Teufel komm raus. Dabei ist es völlig egal, wer gerade welches Instrument spielt. Im Booklet ist jede Aufnahme mit Instrumentalbesetzung angegeben. Die Aufnahmetechnik ist bei Nagel-Hayer wie immer professionell hochwertig, den Musikern entsprechend ausgerichtet. Eine weitere Top-CD dieser tollen Firma aus Deutschland.Weiter so!!<
