Chris Hopkins gehört wohl zu den fleißigsten und ideenreichsten Jazzern unserer Zeit, schaut – und besser noch: hört man sich an, was er an herrlichen Projekten so alles auf die Beine stellt. Was den an sowohl Klavier als auch am Saxophon herausragenden in Deutschland lebenden amerikanischen Künstler dabei aus der Menge heraushebt, ist die durchgängig erstklassige Qualität seiner internationalen Besetzungen, brillanten Live-Konzerte und der Tonträger, die beim eigenen Label Echoes of Swing Productions erscheinen. Nach den zwei köstlichen Alben mit den Jazz Kangaroos liegt jetzt ein Swing-Album mit einer jungen Formation vor, die er durch seine Dozenten-Tätigkeit an der Hochschule für Musik in Köln kennengelernt, zusammengestellt und benannt hat 'The Young Lions'… Zehn Standards von großen Komponisten… bieten eine ebenso entspannte wie beschwingte Dreiviertelstunde klassischen Swing im jungen Gewand. >Auch wenn Chris Hopkins Anfang der 70er in New Jersey geboren wurde, so wuchs der Jazzmusiker doch in Bochum auf, weil sein Vater an der Ruhr-Uni unterrichtete. Und wir kennen’s: Haste den Pott einmal in dir, kriegse den so schnell auch nich mehr raus. Dass Chris seit seinem Grundschulalter musikalisch ausgebildet wurde, hört man der neusten Aufnahme des international beachteten Pianisten an. In Kooperation mit dem Quartett „The Young Lions“ ist ein starkes Livealbum gelungen, das hervorragende loungige Stimmung mit traditionellen Swing-Classics kombiniert. Ob mit Gesang ergänzte Standards wie „My Baby Just Cares For Me“ und „Blue Moon“ oder träumerische Instrumentalstücke wie „Satin Doll“, mehr noch aber mit dem mit überzeugendem Bläsereinsatz gespielten „Indiana“ wird für Fans des Genres alles richtig gemacht.<

>Pianist Chris Hopkins was born in the United States, but has been living in Germany since the age of six. Among his many accomplishments has been to serve as the leader of a superb jazz group comprised of European jazz musicians, Echoes of Swing. He participated as the pianist in DAN BARRETT’S INTERNATIONAL SWING PARTY, and has released, on his Echoes of Swing label, two discs featuring selections from two concerts in Germany recorded during the group’s European tour, Tour 2010- Volumes 1 and 2 (Echoes of Swing – 4508 and 4509). With a lineup of Barrett on trombone, Duke Heitger on trumpet, Dan Block and Engelbert Wrobel on reeds, Hopkins on piano, Eddie Erickson on guitar and banjo, Nicki Parrott on bass and Butch Miles on drums, it was guaranteed that the tour would produce a plethora of exciting and swinging sounds, and that is exactly what can be found on these two discs. Barrett, Heitger, Parrott and Erickson also provide occasional vocals. The program is replete with pop and jazz classics like 'Back Home in Indiana', 'One O’Clock Jump', 'Hindustan', 'On the Sunny Side of the Street' and 'Tea for Two'. This is the kind of group that would be right at home playing at an NJJS concert, and you can enjoy it wherever you have a CD player.<

>Dank langjähriger freundschaftlicher Kontakte zu deutschen und internationalen Top-Musikern des swingenden Mainstream-Jazz gelingt es dem in Sachen Jazz unermüdlichen Manfred Selchow seit vielen Jahren mit schöner Regelmäßigkeit mit solchen Musikern Einzelkonzerte und mehrtägige Festivals in seinem heimatlichen Westoverledingen oder Deutschland-Tourneen zu veranstalten. Selchow organisierte denn auch 2010 eine Tournee von Dan Barrett's International Swing Party durch einige Städte Deutschlands und der Schweiz. Davon liegen nunmehr acht Titel live aus Neu-Ulm und zwei aus Bochum vom März 2010 als Volume 1 auf dieser CD vor. Posaunist Dan Barrett, auch für die Head-Arrangements verantwortlich, hat eine erstrangige Crew um sich versammelt: Duke Heitger, Trompete, Dan Block, Alt- und Tenorsaxophon, Klarinette, Engelbert Wrobel, Klarinette, Sopran- und Tenorsaxophon, Chris Hopkins, Piano, Eddie Erickson, Gitarre/Banjo, Nicki Parrott, Bass, und als hochkarätigen Special Guest Drummer Butch Miles. Angesichts dieser Besetzung präsentiert sich das Programm interpretatorisch nicht anders als ebenso erstklassig. Im Startertitel 'Back home again in Indiana' stellen sich die Bandmitglieder solistisch vor. Unmöglich, hier alle hervorragenden Leistungen der Musiker ob im dichten Zusammenspiel der Vierer-Bläser-Frontline oder in ihren Soli zu würdigen - einiges sei dennoch versucht. Duke Heitger bestätigt mit energetisch-strahlendem Ton sein Format, Engelbert Wrobel und Dan Block erinnern in ihrem Klarinette-Altsaxophon-Duo in 'Tea for two' an legendäre Aufnahmen Jimmie Noones, während Chris Hopkins, nur von Bass und Drums begleitet, in 'Montevideo' seine Auch-Verehrung für Duke Ellingtons Pianospiel ausdrückt. Im Finale des Neu-Ulmer Konzerts glänzt Butch Miles im Count-Basie-Stück 'The King' (erstmals vom Count 1946 aufgenommen). Gesangsnummern von Heitger in 'Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans', Erickson in 'Keepin' out of mischief now' und Parrott in 'Let's do it' bereichern das Geschehen. Ohne jede vorherige Absprache wurde im Bochumer Konzert ein 'Bochum Electricity Blues' improvisiert, gewidmet den Stadtwerken der Stadt, die dieses Konzert mit sponserten. Die liner notes von Dan Barrett, Chris Hopkins und Mannie Selchow informieren ausführlich zu dieser CD, die einmal mehr vorführt, wie top-lebendig und unverbraucht sich heutzutage swingender Mainstream-Jazz, hier auch mit gelegentlichem Chicago-JazzTouch angereichert, präsentieren kann. Das Volume 2 darf man mit Spannung erwarten.<

Die vorliegende CD Vol. 1 bringt Titel (1 - 8) aus dem ersten Teil des Abschlusskonzertes der Band vom 21.03.2010 im Edwin-Scharff-Haus, Neu-Ulm, sowie zwei Bonus-Tracks (9 + 10) aus dem vorangegangenen umjubelten Konzert des Oktetts vom 14.03.2010 in der ausverkauften Bochumer Jahrhunderthalle vor einem hörbar enthusiastischen Publikum. Den kompetenten, aussagekräftigen Liner Notes zu den einzelnen Titeln 1 - 8 von Mannie Selchow ist außer unserer uneingeschränkten Begeisterung beim Genießen der CD wirklich nichts hinzuzufügen. Titel 9 'Bochum Electricity Blues' entstand ohne Absprache spontan improvisiert auf der Bühne: während eines ausgedehnten Pianosolos von Chris Hopkins zu Beginn sang Dan Barrett den Kollegen eine im Moment ersonnene Blues-Melodie ins Ohr, mit der die Bläser einsetzten, und woraus nach und nach das Thema sich vor den Ohren des Ensembles wie der Zuhörer in der Jahrhunderthalle und damit dieser Blues sich entwickelte. Such Is Jazz! Mit seinem Armstrong zitierenden, strahlenden Trumpetsolo in 'Do You Know What lt Means To Miss New Orleans' beschließt Duke Heitger in einzigartiger Weise Vol. 1 der 'Tour 2010-Live!'. Für Besucher dieser beiden Konzerte sind die highlights eine lebendige Erinnerung. Swingfreunde, die nicht das Vergnügen hatten, Konzerte dieser 'Tour 2010' von DAN BARRETT'S INTERNATIONAL SWING PARTY live genießen zu können, werden sehr froh sein, mit dieser Live-CD in die mitreißende Swingathmosphäre eintauchen zu können. - Wir haben jedenfalls diese Scheibe gleich zweimal hintereinander aufgelegt! >Hier haben wir eine CD, die alleine deswegen schon eine Rarität ist, weil sich Musiker heute kaum so 'nackt' vor ein Live-Publikum stellen würden wie diese fünf Herren hier. Es wurde kein einziges Mal geprobt, einige hatten noch nie zuvor miteinander gespielt oder gar die Stücke gekannt. Wie kann das nur gutgehen? Wer kommt denn da auf die Idee,das Ganze auch noch aufzunehmen? Ein Wahnsinnsunternehmen.
Es ging gut-wie gut, kann man hier hören. Die beiden Holzbläser Engelbert Wrobel (Klarinette, Sopransax, Tenorsax) und Frank Roberscheuten (Klarinette, Altsax, Tenorsax) kennen sich und können auch miteinander locker spielen. Bindeglied Chris Hopkins am Klavier hat mit den Beiden schon gespielt, schrieb für manche Stücke Bassist Harvey Weston noch schnell die Akkorde auf, und Schlagzeuger Bobby Worth schneiderte das Ganze dann perfekt zusammen. Klar, es gibt keine fein ausgearbeitete Arrangements, wie man da sonst bei Wrobel oder Roberscheuten kennt - aber genau DAS macht den Reiz dieser CD aus. Alles geschieht spontan, eben 'aus dem Bauch heraus'.
Wir hören dabei trotzdem nicht nur bekannte Standards, sondern einige selten gespielte Titel. Aus dem großen 'American Songbook' wurden 'You Do Something To Me' von Cole Porter, 'Can't Help Lovin' That Man' von Jerome Kern und 'I Can't Get Started' von Vernon Duke/George Gershwin ausgesucht. 'Robbin's Nest' (Sir Chares Thompson) und 'I Surrender Dear' sind Standards des Jazz geworden, 'Candlelights' (Bix Beiderbecke) und 'El Salon De Gutbucket' (Charlie Shavers) stammen von zwei der Trompeten-Legenden des Jazz.
Eine schöne CD,die sicher ihre Freunde finden wird. Mir hat sie sehr gut gefallen, weil sie etwas von der typischen Jazzclub-Athmosphäre hat, die ich noch kennenlernen durfte. Und swingen können die Jungs ebenso.<

The jam session on this live CD occurred during the 1999 IAJRC convention in Hamburg, featuring Engelbert Wrobel (clarinet, tenor sax, and soprano sax) and Frank Roberscheuten (clarinet, tenor sax, and alto sax), two musicians who are quite familiar with each other's playing, along with a pickup rhythm section of pianist Chris Hopkins, bassist Harvey Weston, and drummer Bobby Worth. The selections are fairly standard for the genre, including 'You Do Something to Me,' 'I Can't Get Started,' and 'I Surrender Dear,' all of which (along with the remaining tracks) are played with inspiration and enthusiasm by this talented group that was thrown together with little time to rehearse. Recommended.<
